The announcement coincides with today’s expiration of Amazon’s 1-Click business method patent, which let customers buy with just one click without having to enter and re-enter payment or shipping information each time they make a purchase. Amazon vigorously defended the 1-Click patent, suing Barnes & Noble for implementing a similar solution in the late 1990’s and ultimately licensing it to companies like Apple. While it is debatable whether Amazon should have been awarded the patent in the first place, the value of the 1-Click patent is unquestionable, with one low-end estimate of the technology increasing Amazon sales by 5 percent, and valuing the patent at $2.4 billion per year.
